NaNo Day 8 - Double Up Donation Day!

Today Nanowrimo is giving away some amazing prizes and swag! Donating to this amazing organization will get you double the goodies and you'll get that awesome halo on your picture.

The other half of the show is to double-up your word count. Today that is my main concern - looking at the stats on my Nano dashboard it looks like I've averaged 1300 words a day (pshhh totally a lie, as it's gone down last couple days >_>), but it will be my goal to do double!

....I just resisted the urge to pull out a calculator. Whew. That means I need to write 2600 words today! FREAKING YEAH!

First thing I'm gonna do is get my halo. I figure if I have some monetary investment in my writing, it will definitely motivate me not to give up.

Second, I'll continue to head-bang to imaginary nano-metal songs that I'll create in my head until I get some AMAZING ideas.
I'm ready to rock!

To recap, yesterday didn't go my way. I spit out such a small amount of words that it almost hurt. Even though November 7 was over, I was still determined to continue on. I stayed up until 3am and was able to pound out an extra 1369 words!!!! So I'm already half-way to my double-up goal :D

Basically I'm at a part in the story where I created an unplanned scene, that is taking much longer to write than I planned. It seems like I got sucked into writing and just wonder if its necessary. I'm about 12k into my story and didn't really hit the defining "call to action" event that will set the rest of the story. It makes me question my intro and if it's too slow...if all those words I wrote are meaningless...

My fiance said that any scene is important if it builds your characters and show how they interact. It doesn't matter if it has to do with the plot. I don't know if he's right, but it made me feel a lot better. Now I can stuff my halo in my thoughts face and just keep writing!

Here I go back to my random scene and will attempt to wrap it up. I want to get back to the juicy bits.
...
Boom cha-lac-a-lac!  After a couple hours of struggling and using bracket tricks, I was able to meet my double-up goal and max my word count at 13,528 words!!!! YAY :D

EXCERPT
It feels like I wrote so much today, I don't know what to choose exactly. But how about I show you what Jenkin's discovery is, hmm?
===========
When Jenkins sucked the last molecule of liquid from his bowl, he sighed with satisfaction and looked over at Jason.“Enter the code 45021 into the keypad and bring up meh last main’ence log.”
“Finally!” Jason exclaimed and walked triumphantly to the equipment. “I respect your ability for suspense, but you stretched this conversation out way too long.” He ticked in the numbers with ease and the machine seemed to choke on its circuits.
“Jist whack on the left side, it always makes that sound,” the old man offered.
Not wanting to break the unstable connections of the machinery, Jason found a rather sturdy space and knocked the display panel with his palm. The machine happily clicked back into place and a ‘Code Confirmed!’ message was shown.
“I should probably fix that for you Jenks, “Jason started to say, but the old man cut him off. “Ye need to hear this.”
A low gurgling sound filled the room, changing its tone and frequency in a regular manner. Sometimes the audio faded in and out, making it difficult for Jason to recognize what he was hearing. He looked back at the communications panel and typed in a new key sequence to pinpoint the origin of the sound. Lines of data filled the screen and Jason sucked in a breath.
“When the Mayor decided to ‘vestigate the old wreck we found in the eastern farms, my machines started act’n funny.” Jenkins leaned back in his chair and crossed his legs on top of the table. “I thought it was broke, so I starte fiddle’n with it just like ye showed me. That’s when I found this.”
“It’s an active video signal,” Jason breathed.
“I knew yehs was a smart one. Naturally I thought the same thing, so I went to the dig site to see for meself. I told the Mayor what I’d found. Course he didn’t care and told me to go home.” His brows furrowed. “They don’t let me near the wreck no more either.”
Jason clenched his jaw. It wasn’t fair how the townsfolk shunned Jenkins because of his curiosity, and Jason could sympathize. [… write something here about how people treated knowledge of the old world as dangerous…]
“They also told me not to ask after the other items inside the wreck. It was clear everything was to be disassembled first thing in the morning.”
“What?! No!” Jason spoke angrily.” I’ll talk to Shawn and make him listen. I need to get my hands on that video clip.”
“Aye and if he don’t care jist like the Mayor? Nah, I says we go get that video tenight.”
Both Shiri and Jason stared at the old man. “Tonight?”
“Wouldn’t that be tricky to get past the guards?” Jason asked. “Not to mention we’d be breaking town curfew…”
“Curfew?!” the old man scoffed. “ I thought all youngsters loved teh be break’n rules. Ye not getting ole on me, are ye boy?”
“Yeah old man,” Shiri smirked at Jason.
“Hey lassie, that’s no way to be talkn’ to ye elders, “Jenkins started to sputter in offense.
Shiri rolled her eyes and pushed her chair away from the table. “I was talking to Jason, Mr.Jenkins. Not you. You’re still much too… young at heart.”
Jenkins got up from his seat as well and lifted his arms for another hug-attack against Shiri. Jason swiftly stopped him first.
The group snuck back through town and made it into the Maintenance Bay undetected.  Feeling into his pocket, he pulled out a collapsible pair of green glasses. He put them on and clicked the small button close to frame sitting on his ear. A spark of green flashed across the lenses as they activated, allowing Jason to see into the darkness. The main city lights were blinking brightly in the distance and the silence meant everyone had settled down for the night.  He looked around for any of the town guards, but no one was close by.
He gave a silent hand-signal and Shiri nodded. She nudged Jenkins in the arm and the group proceeded to move.  Ruined ticket booths marked the middle of the bay, blocking off the tunnels that led underground. That was where they needed to go. Keeping their flashlights off, the group crawled through the ticket machines and made their way down.
Jason walked onto the platform first and saw a yellow light floating deeper into the tunnel. Quickly he shielded Shiri against the wall with his arm. The town guards patrolled these areas to make sure none of the locals decided to do…err, what he and his friends were trying to do right now. The patrolman walked around the corner and Jenkins shot forward. He motioned for the others to follow him across the train tracks to a curiously sized human-shaped hole in the wall. Jenkins smiled mischievously and wiggled his eyebrows before taking a step inside.
