NaNo Day 5 - The beginning of the coffee counter

Just for kicks and giggles, I decided to document how many cups of coffee that I've drank while writing on my NaNo story. Maybe it could turn into a scientific study about how caffine can spark motivation? So the current daily count count to date is:

13 CUPS FOR NANO!


So today I started writing where I left off yesterday, where my main character is reading a book. And he is supposed to read a section of text that is so inspiring and foreshadows events in the next parts of the story. Yep that text is super important. And empty. I honestly can't think of anything to write for that stupid book! After an hour of sitting here thinking and drinking coffee, I'm simply gonna use a trick I recently discovered from a writing buddy:

When you don't know what to type, use this:  [...]  

It's a brilliant placeholder for text! I can totally come back to this later, hooray I can keep writing. So needless to say, my excerpt today will not include any meaningful book-reading from my MC. Instead he'll telepathically know how cool that book was and simply continue with his day.

So along with my new word count of:   9428  , I also added 283 words to my world building document. It's nice that I keep getting new ideas about the environment as I write along. Yay!

EXCERPT

While the except doesn't contain what my book says, it does describe book. It's my first attempt at putting "fantasy foreshadowing" in my story and world. Maybe it's not enough for now, but I'll keep writing and see how this goes.

Maybe taking some notes would ease his mind. He flipped his journal to a clean page. Reaching back into his bag, he pulled out a pencil and an older book covered with beautifully engraved leather. It was the first book he ever restored. Getting advice from some of the local textile makers, he learned how to pierce the leather in a way to replicate some of decorative symbols contained within the book’s pages. He felt pretty proud at the result and even some of the other villagers had asked after his talent. He let his fingers run over the ribbed surface of the cover and proceeded to open the book where the red ribbon was placed.

The writings contained within had to be a work of fiction, but the contents had nonetheless held his attention. It described new types of physical laws and energies, not the common things of science he had been taught. These “invisible” forces were not bound by time or decay, but were described as eternal. Jason had never heard of a substance that could last forever. The text went on to describe that all physical matter in our world is actually created by non-physical forces.

That was the part of the book that fascinated him. If such forces could manipulate matter, but could not be seen or decay, Jason imagined that could cause a lot of destruction without people knowing about it. One of his ongoing theories was that a powerful force must have pushed the last civilization into a world-wide disaster of some kind.  He hoped that studying the book would give him more clues.

The other part of the book was a little frustrating. It made little sense and seemed to describe children stories. Across the veil of another realm, there were beings of light that guarded our world. There were legends of fire giants that would walk the ground but not burn it. There were spirits that gave life to the forests and rivers. All these living creatures were not human and could not be seen. Jason flipped back to the beginning of the book to read again it’s opening pages. Perhaps these fairy tales were a type of code for the book’s true contents?
